Top leaders drawn from Raila Odinga-led Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) have now demanded that Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka takes oath as deputy people’s president.
This comes days after Wiper leaders ruled out possibilities of the former Vice President being sworn-in, dismissing the oath as one without any political benefit.
However, in what could further escalate tension within National Super Alliance (Nasa) coalition, the Standard reports that Raila’s confidants John Mbadi, who is the ODM chairman, Edwin Sinfuna, who was recently appointed ODM secretary general and Homa Bay Women Representative Gladys Wanga have insisted that Musyoka has to take the oath, if he is to regain the coalition’s trust.
“He (Musyoka) should take the oath to regain trust from the people. Failing to do so will be betrayal of the same people he had told he would be sworn in. The decision is his,” Wanga said.
“Taking the oath will only restore the trust the people had in him. Failing to do so is betrayal of the same people he had consistently told he would take oath. It’s up to him to decide,” said Wanga.
In response to the leaders calls for him to be sworn-in immediately, Kalonzo said:”We have stated severally that this issue is being discussed at the summit level. I operate at the level of my co-principals. I cannot respond to what the MPs are talking about.”
Reacting to the ODM leaders demand, Makueni MP Dan Maanzo, a close ally of Musyoka, said the Odinga-captained party is up to no good.
“ODM’s brigade has used every effort to split NASA. This is a strategy for them to run away from obeying the NASA agreement which stipulates that Kalonzo will be the coalition’s flag-bearer. ODM is also angling to work with Ruto in his bid for the presidency in 2022,” Maanzo said.
“We need to be told if they are being instructed by Raila to do so, if they are doing this for their personal gain, or if they are working secretly for Jubilee to rock NASA. Once we establish their master, we will act appropriately,” Maanzo said.
