Court Orders Gov't to Reinstate Security of 141 NASA MPs

The government has been ordered to immediately reinstate bodyguards of 141 MPs allied to National Super Alliance (Nasa).

Issuing the orders on Tuesday, High Court judge Roselyn Aburili temporarily suspended the government move to withdraw the security and revoke firearm licenses for 141 MPs, pending hearing of a petition they filed on Monday.

The 141, through lawyer Peter Kaluma moved to court on Monday to challenge the legal foundation of Inspector General of Police and the Firearms Licencing Board’s decision to withdraw their security and revoke their firearm licenses.

The MPs told the court that their bodyguards only received verbal notices on January 30th, ordering them to report back to their working stations without further explanation.

The Nasa MPs argued that the decision is ill motivated and meant to expose them to danger and disfranchise their services to the people who elected them.

The case will be mentioned on February 19th.

The State reportedly withdrew the officers attached to the MPs following the controversial swearing-in of opposition leader Raila Odinga.

The government, through Interior Ministry launched a crackdown on opposition leaders involved in the oath plan and has since conducted a number of arrests and revoked passports to some of the politicians in addition to withdrawing their security.
