Nandi County has made history after electing several young leaders including governor, senator and a number of MCAs in the general elections held last week.
32-year-old Nandi Governor-elect Stephen arap Sang is now the youngest governor in the country, while 30-year-old Senator-elect Kiprotich Cherargey will also be the youngest member of the Senate.
Nandi also voted in many Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) who are in their 20s. Kilibwoni ward representative Cynthia Suge, 24, is the youngest MCA in the country.
The newly-elected governor Stephen Sang was only 28 years old when he was elected to the Senate in 2013 general elections – again as the youngest elected member of the House.
“The age factor is a non-issue; I believe the people of Nandi believed in our agenda-oriented manifestos and our intentions to change the county for the better,” said Sang.
Despite his age, Sang made a mark in the first senate under the constitution 2010, serving in the the Senate Legal Affairs, Human Rights Committee and also on the House Speaker’s Panel.
He will be remembered for sponsoring a number of practical bills, including the controversial County Development Boards Bill that was vehemently opposed by County governors.
“Nandi residents elected me because of my track record of defending them and their rights even when I was not in office,” Senator-elect Cherargey said.
Kilibwoni Ward representative-elect Ms Suge (independent) beat odds to floor Jubilee Party candidate Emmanuel Kipchumba.
