Kenya on Monday deported two Indian Citizens after they were charged with two counts of illegal medical practice and being in country illegally. The two were arrested after it was established that they were fraudulently recruiting and referring Kenyan patients to India in exchange for kickbacks.
They were arraigned at a Nairobi court on Monday morning, before being taken to the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport for the flight to Delhi, India.
Atul Arora and Shyam Singh who were living in Nairobi’s Parklands area were arrested following a two-year investigation into an illicit scheme, which they conducted with the help of senior officials in the Health sector.
They are said to have recruited more than 100 Kenyans in two years, and were carrying similar operations in many countries, including Uganda, Tanzania, United Arab Emirates and Pakistan.
Investigations revealed that the two were paying local agents as much as Sh500,000 for every patient sent to India for treatment.
Their scheme mainly targets surgical patients suffering from non-communicable diseases including; cancer, liver and kidney-related diseases, heart diseases, as well as those in need of knee and hip replacement, dentistry, cosmetic and plastic surgery.
They were found to have links with 40 medical facilities in India including; Apollo, Medanta, Max, Fortis, Artemis, Kailash, Japyee, BLK, Asian, Metro, Moolchand and IBS hospitals.
