The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) is now going for house owners who have not been filing tax returns from their rental income.

In its latest crackdown on tax cheats, the taxman has asked developers to supply it with information on customers who purchased houses from them. KRA said it had established that several homeowners have been renting out their houses without remitting the required taxes.

In a letter dated June 28th, KRA commissioner for domestic taxes said the information provided by developers will exclusively be used for tax compliance purposes.

A letter to one of real estate companies, Five Star Gardens Syokimau, says the information should be submitted to the tax agency within seven days in soft copy on an excel worksheet.

Some of the details being sought by KRA include unit number, name of owners, owners ID, Owners PIN, tenants details, rent paid, and the date when the rent was first and last paid.

"We look forward to your favourable response," the letter says.

An earlier amnesty issued by KRA to landlords evading tax to declare their rental income expired on June 30th. In 2015, the tax agency sent tax compliance notices to over 60,000 rental house owners across the country.
