How Kenyans Have Embraced the Solo Dating Trend
Ms. Aroko

The concept of solo dating has gained significant traction in recent years, offering individuals an opportunity to invest in themselves without external pressures or distractions.

This trend reflects a growing appreciation for independence and self-love in today’s fast-paced society. Ms. Aroko, a journalist, has incorporated solo dates into her regular routine, venturing out twice monthly to enjoy a variety of activities. These outings range from dining at diverse restaurants to attending movies or indulging in spa treatments. She also finds pleasure in solitary picnics, where she can observe the world around her. Initially, Ms. Aroko grappled with feelings of loneliness and self-doubt, questioning the normalcy of her solitary pursuits. However, as time progressed, she developed a deep appreciation for her own company, fostering a strong sense of independence.

A unique aspect of Ms. Aroko’s approach is her creative planning method. She organizes her monthly activities alphabetically, adding structure and excitement to her solo adventures. This system has led her to explore a wide range of experiences, from bowling to dining at various establishments such as About Thyme, Soho, and Valley Coffee Shop. Throughout her culinary explorations, chicken remains her preferred dish. The solo dating trend extends beyond gender boundaries, as exemplified by Ally Gakweli, a 27-year-old marketing specialist. Gakweli embraced solo outings as a means to cultivate self-comfort and independence. He frequently attends concerts and dines alone, valuing the flexibility to pursue his interests without interruption.

Unlike Ms. Aroko, Gakweli prefers a more fluid approach to planning, aiming to experience approximately three activities each month. While solo dating can lead to heartwarming interactions, it is not without its challenges. Solo diners often face societal stereotypes, with many assuming they are seeking companionship. Ms. Aroko notes that arriving alone at a busy venue can lead to misconceptions about one’s intentions. The trend has garnered a following among various individuals, including Emmah Cherutich, who began solo outings over a decade ago. Now 29, Cherutich reflects on how these experiences have positively impacted her mental health, providing opportunities for introspection and creativity through journaling during her outings.

Deborah Faraja’s journey into solo dating emerged as a means of healing after a difficult breakup. Beginning in 2021, her monthly practice has evolved into a personalized experience where she tailors her outings to her mood, sometimes opting for casual affairs and other times using the opportunity to showcase her fashion sense. This customization adds an element of joy and self-expression to her experiences.

  1. Let me give you my prognosis…
Let me give you my prognosis about how this innocuously appearing phenomenon will impact the future…
See folks, right now South Korea(and a few others -Japan included) is worried that their dwindling birth rate might spell doom for the future.
This population downward fall is caused by these ‘self actualization’ life style, and ‘me come first attitude’. Koreans are engrossed into themselves to the detriment of depopulating themselves.
Right now, most of the farm work is done by foreigners. And soon foreigners will also occupy other spheres… of work.
Simply put, South Koreans are not marrying, and having kids, because they have come to embrace a life of work, self gratification, and solitary.Hardly conducive for increasing population.
Kenya is not even close to where Korea is,but we see the trend. Certainly people will always populate, but with changing life styles, and women not valuing motherhood that much,I foresee some african countries going the Korean way.
Norway and other countries that see this downward trend are taking action. Some of the action Include monetary, and housing benefits for women who give birth to children;of course preferably with a hubby sticking around.
Never in my wildest dreams did I ever think I would hear such a ridiculous thing as the government persuading man and women to get it on.I have always thought it as avery natural thing, especially the way men behave when they see an attractive beauty, but recent observations about mating, dating, and human sexuality have had me re evaluate my previous”knowledge”.Men are not manly anymore.Just simps…
It may come as a shock to many that just about all our human behaviors ,as natural as they appear, are learned. Our instincts eroded eons ago, when we lived like our brothers the bonobos, and our cousins the apes, and uncle gorilla, and auntie Orangutan …
Yes, men can even learn to stay home, while madam hustle for the bacon. Yes, we can even learn ‘bad’ behavior, like Mom having 3 boyfriends…,and papa cavorting with ‘our’ 15 year old maid, and having a population increase, which could be a good thing, but in unorthodox manner. My two cents.

    • I’m getting old and I have…
I’m getting old and I have learned a thing or two. The decisions you make in your youth tend to have long term results. The thing is, time and the world are unimpressed with your pronouncements, affectations and conceits. You will get old, looks will disappear, biology will not be stopped and your body will betray you. These will be the same people saying there are no good marriage partners as they get to their 30s and 40s(it’s to late at this point). This will be more so for the women than the men(life isn’t fair). I wish them well but I foresee much regret, recriminations and remorse in their futures.

  3. And before long one wonders…
And before long one wonders… where did my 20s go, when did I pass my 30s and so on,as the grim ripper approaches.
