Approximately 60% of individuals in Africa who have diabetes are unaware of their condition despite the fact that it can be easily detected through routine screening and blood tests.
As reported by the Aging Analytics Agency’s recently published “Global Industry Diabetes Overview 2023” the extent of undiagnosed diabetes cases is especially strong in Africa notably exceeding the 40% global rate. The Western Pacific regions and South East Asia are closely following behind. Diabetes is a chronic illness that occurs when blood glucose levels are elevated due to the body’s inability to produce enough insulin or effectively use the insulin it produces. The report also reveals that Africa has the lowest number of known individuals living with diabetes with approximately 24 million cases. On a global scale, over 500 million people are currently living with diabetes.
As indicated by the 2022 Kenya Demographic Health Survey, only 1% of those aged 15-59 in Kenya have been diagnosed with diabetes, with a greater proportion of men (73%) taking medication compared to women (63%). However, the number of diabetes cases is predicted to grow rapidly by 2045, with forecasted diagnoses hitting around 800 million people. The Pacific region is home to the largest population of individuals living with diabetes, with approximately 90 million people affected. The changes in dietary habits and nutrient intake over the past four decades could potentially be responsible for the escalation in diabetes cases worldwide.
Using diverse regional dietary patterns as a comparison, the report lays out numerous identical traits evident among them. Traditional diets, once rich in fibre and low in fat, have been replaced by a “Western diet” that is high in fat, saturated fat, sodium, cholesterol, free sugars, and added sugars. This shift in eating habits has led to an alarming increase in the consumption of unhealthy snacks, particularly among school children. Despite the staggering amount of money spent on diabetes care, which exceeds $970 billion, the report highlights that there were still seven million deaths worldwide due to diabetes in 2021.

A human being is a strange animal. How do you explain some man having sex knowing very well that the woman is infected, and the woman gives in because the “john” is offering more cash…?I can understand if some man gets malaria from a mosquito bite, but not Aids from a hooker. Can you?
