Raila's Bodyguard George Oduor is Dead

Longtime Raila Odinga bodyguard George Oduor died in a Nairobi city hospital Wednesday evening after an illness.

Oduor was a constant presence in Odinga's security detail since the 1990s and also served as a police reservist. Oduor's death has triggered widespread expressions of sorrow. Kileleshwa Member of County Assembly Robert Alai has mourned him as a mentor who offered guidance to younger politicians. ODM Director of Communications Philip Etale describes Oduor as a loyal friend.

"You were more than an aide to Baba. You offered to us brotherly advice and sought to mentor us,” Kileleshwa MCA Roberet Alai said upon learning of Oduor's death.

Before guarding Raila Odinga, Oduor served Jaramogi Oginga Odinga, Kenya's first vice president, until his death in 1994. A close friend notes that Oduor grew up in Kaloleni, Nairobi, and his passion for fitness contributed to his career in security.

He also underwent extensive VIP protection training both locally and internationally. Despite his high-profile position, Oduor remained discreet and rarely spoke about his life and work.

“He was keen on fitness training and weightlifting,” the friend told the Star.

“He initially offered his services to Raila’a father, Mzee Jaramogi Oginga Odinga.”
