MP Peter Salasya Alleges Planned Attack at Nyayo Stadium During Kenya-Gabon Match

Mumias East Member of Parliament Peter Salasya alleges a premeditated assault occurred against him at Nyayo Stadium on Sunday during the Gabon versus Kenya Harambee Stars football match.

The incident, which has drawn widespread condemnation and fueled concerns over the safety of public figures, saw Salasya accosted by a group of youths. Salasya, in a video statement posted on X, claims the attack was planned, with perpetrators exploiting his known attendance at the game. He states that while he attended the game to support Kenyan football, he had left his security detail behind.

"What happened yesterday (Sunday) was a planned thing. I remember I was the first one who told people to come to Nyayo. They took advantage because they knew I would definitely come because I am not a coward at all," he said.

Salasya reports being warned of potential trouble upon arrival and notes that an individual persistently followed him, even into the VIP section. He believes the coordinated nature of the assault indicates a deliberate targeting, alleging that the attackers are identifiable. Online video footage shows the MP, wearing an AFC Leopards jersey, being pushed toward the stadium exit by a group of youths who hurled objects at him.

"I could have decided to go and sit in the middle of the pitch and that game would have been postponed. Another option could have caused a stampede," he said.

Police intervened, escorting him to safety while a crowd followed, some chanting demands for him to respect ODM leader Raila Odinga. Despite the incident, Salasya expresses gratitude that his bodyguards were not present, suggesting their involvement might have escalated the situation, and notes the potential for a stampede had he reacted differently.

Saboti MP Caleb Amisi has condemned the attack, calling for justice and accountability.
