Netherlands Royal Couple Explores Kenya's Horticultural Sector in Naivasha Visit

King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima of the Netherlands are currently in Naivasha, Kenya, on the second day of a state visit focused on strengthening economic and cultural ties.

Their itinerary includes a tour of the Naivasha Inland Container Depot, a crucial facility for preparing and storing Kenya's agricultural exports, particularly flowers destined for the Netherlands. Traffic disruptions are expected along the Nairobi-Nakuru Highway as the royal entourage travels via Mai Mahiu. The Netherlands is the largest importer of Kenyan roses, with a significant portion making their way to the Aalsmeer Flower Auction.

According to Foreign Affairs Principal Secretary Korir Sing’oei, Kenyan flowers contribute significantly to the 19 million flowers and 2 million plants sold daily at the auction, many of which are re-exported worldwide. The royal couple's schedule includes a tour of horticultural projects, giving them a firsthand perspective on the horticultural value chain in Naivasha.

They will also participate in a panel discussion centred on climate security, reaffirming the shared commitment of Kenya and the Netherlands to addressing global environmental issues. The Dutch government has been a consistent supporter of agricultural research and environmental initiatives in Kenya, further solidifying its position as a key trading partner.

Beyond flowers, Kenya exports coffee, tea, fruits, vegetables, fish, and tobacco to the Netherlands. In return, Kenya imports machinery, chemicals, and dairy products. This bilateral trade relationship highlights the economic interdependence between the two nations.

The visit follows a busy first day which included a reception at State House, a ceremonial tree-planting at Thogoto Forest in Kiambu County, and a discussion with young Kenyans about human rights. The first day concluded with a state banquet hosted by President William Ruto and First Lady Rachel Ruto.
