Kawira Mwangaza Vows Legal Battle and Political Comeback

Kawira Mwangaza, the recently impeached governor of Meru County, has declared her intention to challenge her removal in Kenya's highest court.

She asserts that the impeachment is a result of political manoeuvring and a betrayal of the will of Meru's electorate. In a press conference held shortly after the High Court upheld the Senate's decision to remove her from office, Mwangaza vowed to fight what she described as a "grave injustice" and to hold those she believes orchestrated her downfall accountable. Mwangaza did not hold back in her accusations, pointing fingers at a "complicit national government," male chauvinists, and political rivals, suggesting their combined efforts led to her ouster.

While she stopped short of directly naming President William Ruto, her veiled criticisms hinted at a lack of support from the national government in upholding the rule of law. She also lamented the alleged interference in the judicial process, claiming that courts, meant to be her refuge, were manipulated to deny her justice. The motion to impeach Mwangaza was initially brought forth by Zipporah Kinya, a nominated Member of the County Assembly (MCA) from the United Democratic Alliance (UDA).

Mwangaza had previously survived an impeachment attempt in 2023, but the then-Majority Leader Evans Mawira (UDA) was removed from his position after switching allegiance to Mwangaza's side. This history underscores the intense political infighting that has plagued Mwangaza's tenure as governor.
Mwangaza specifically accused her political opponents of celebrating the support they received from national leaders during the inauguration of her successor, Isaac Mutuma.

She argued that this support demonstrated a clear bias against her and undermined the democratic process. "Instead of the national government upholding the rule of law, it actively influenced the outcome, ensuring that the voices of Meru residents who elected me were ignored," Mwangaza stated.

In addition to her legal challenge, Mwangaza announced her plans for a political comeback. She intends to form a new political party and contest the governorship in the 2027 elections. She stated that running as an independent candidate had proven to be a strategic disadvantage, and forming a party would provide her with the necessary support and infrastructure. Mwangaza has vowed to continue engaging with the people of Meru through political rallies and charity events, demonstrating her commitment to the county's development.

She also pledges to hold the new administration accountable, ensuring that it serves the interests of the people rather than engaging in corrupt practices.
Mwangaza's removal comes after numerous corruption allegations, which she denies by claiming to be a victim of a political witch-hunt. She cites a career built from humble beginnings that prove her honest work ethic. The High Court's decision to uphold Mwangaza's impeachment led to celebrations among her opponents in Meru County, while her supporters expressed disappointment and outrage.
