Pastor Exits Kirinyaga Burial After Refusing Political Speeches from Gachagua Allies

A burial ceremony in Kirinyaga was disrupted on Tuesday when a pastor declined to allow speeches from lawmakers and leaders associated with former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.

The incident culminated in the pastor's departure from the event amid rising tensions. The dispute arose when Kirinyaga Women Representative Njeri Maina, along with Senator Kamau Murango and other local leaders, requested an opportunity to address the mourners. The pastor's refusal sparked immediate discontent, leading to chants from the crowd demanding respect for their elected officials and their right to speak.

Female pastors attempted to mediate the situation, but their efforts to appease the agitated crowd were unsuccessful. The pastor subsequently chose to leave the ceremony, followed by jeering mourners who recorded the event. Speaking to the media after the incident, the pastor explained that the leaders had initially been granted speaking time but had allegedly used the platform to advance political agendas rather than offering condolences.

''This is a burial ceremony and is not a political gathering. We are not fighting with them, we have honoured them and given them an opportunity to speak to the people,'' the pastor said

He says that the event's purpose was to honour the deceased and support the family, not to serve as a venue for political discourse. The pastor also refutes accusations that his actions were politically motivated or influenced by the current government. He insists that his priority was to maintain the solemnity of the burial service and ensure it remained focused on its intended purpose.

''Instead of condoling with the family, they were like settling scores. This was not good and is not allowed,'' he added.
