Nairobi Green Army Conducts Cleanup Operation at Stima Plaza Following Illegal Dumping

Following a recent illegal dumping incident, Nairobi City County's Green Army conducted a comprehensive cleanup, fumigation, and sanitation operation at Stima Plaza and the surrounding Ngara area early Saturday.
The initiative, aimed at mitigating environmental and health risks, follows concerns raised by Public Health Principal Mary Muthoni, who warned that the waste's foul odor could cause respiratory problems.
Public Health Chief Officer Tom Nyakaba, overseeing the operation, emphasized the county's commitment to maintaining hygiene in public spaces, stating, "It is our duty to ensure that people live and work in a clean environment."
The weekend timing was strategically chosen to minimize disruption. Green Army teams fumigated both inside and outside Stima Plaza, while water trucks with treated water washed the Ngara roads.
The cleanup also signals progress in resolving a dispute between the Nairobi City County Government (NCCG) and the Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC). The conflict centered on Sh4.8 billion in unpaid wayleave fees and outstanding electricity bills.
Governor Johnson Sakaja recently announced an agreement with Energy Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi to find a lasting solution, facilitated by intervention from the Head of Public Service.
"We have agreed to take up the issue with the CS and find a lasting solution," Sakaja stated.
He also addressed the dumping incident, explaining that it was accidental and swiftly addressed. "An unfortunate incident occurred where one of our trucks tipped garbage in the area. That was not the intention, and within 30 minutes, we had cleared it. We are investigating the matter internally."
