Bomet Pastor Charged with Assault Following Viral Exorcism Video

Pastor Zachary Kibet Rotich of Bethel for Jesus Ministry International has been formally charged with assault after a video showing him allegedly flogging church members, predominantly women, surfaced and ignited public outrage.

Rotich, who had been evading authorities, surrendered himself to Chebunyo Police Station in Chepalungu Constituency. The charges stem from an incident in Kapkimolwo Village, Itembe location, where Rotich is accused of inflicting bodily harm on Mercy Cherotich.

The viral video also depicts church members allegedly burning a woman over a fire, an act purportedly carried out to exorcise demons.
Rotich appeared before Resident Magistrate Mbethi Michuki and pleaded not guilty. He has been remanded in police custody for seven days pending further investigations.

Prosecutor Peter Mwangangi argued against bail, citing concerns that Rotich poses a flight risk and could interfere with witnesses, particularly as several victims have already provided statements detailing the alleged abuse. Defense attorney Kadet Kiprono argued that his client voluntarily surrendered and is a law-abiding citizen. The bail hearing is scheduled for March 6, 2025, at which time the court will determine bond terms and set a hearing date.

The Bethel for Jesus Ministry International, established in 2015, has come under increased scrutiny for its alleged practice of beating and burning followers, primarily women, under the guise of exorcism. Reports indicate that the church's doctrines shifted in 2023, with leaders claiming enhanced powers to cast out demons. Female congregants are reportedly required to wear white headscarves and long dresses during services held on Wednesdays, Saturdays, and Sundays.
