President William Ruto will on Saturday embark on a five-day tour of the Mt Kenya region which has been plagued by issues such as the collapse of the coffee market, brokers, the Handshake, and the “one man, one shilling, one vote” politics.

During his stay, the President will visit various counties including Kiambu, Murang’a, Kirinyaga, and Nyeri, all of which are crucial to his rule as he faces numerous challenges such as the high cost of living, harsh taxation regimes, anti-government protests, and impatience towards his pre-election pledges. Furthermore, the region accounts for 47% of his government and gave him 83% of the votes in the August 9 General Election, making it essential for him to consolidate his position as he eyes a second-term bid in 2027. Meanwhile, Githunguri MP Gathoni wa Muchomba has urged the President to use the Coffee Cherry Advance Revolving Fund to purchase coffee from farmers following the market’s collapse due to the recent cancellation of brokerage licenses.

As reported by the presidential communication department, Ruto has plans to speak before the public at Githurai and Kenol towns while travelling this Saturday. Additionally, The Head of State will unveil a new water project in Kagio market in Kirinyaga County and also address a crowd at the Baricho shopping centre. Lastly, he will be inaugurating Marua-State Lodge Road in Karatina town which is essential in supporting transportation and promoting area development.

On Sunday, the President will transform the Sagana State Lodge into a worship centre and host an interdenominational prayer service. The following day, he will tour the Mukurwe-ini constituency in Nyeri County, commissioning a road before launching water projects in neighbouring Tetu and Othaya constituencies. Finally, he will visit Nyeri town where he will open a bus park to decongest the town, create small hawking hustles, and foster a friendly transport environment.

He will then visit the Kenya Co-operative Creameries facility in Kiganjo Town located in Nyeri County after which he will attend a Mt Kenya leaders meeting at Sagana State Lodge. The meeting will focus on agriculture, infrastructure, health, and education, and will be attended by elected officials. The president will conclude his tour by inaugurating the three-story, 175-bed Naromoru Level Four Hospital in Nyeri County, and then launching an affordable housing project in Gichugu constituency which is the home base of Martha Karua, Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition Party’s vice-presidential candidate in last year’s election.

There is something brewing in the Mountain if Ruto will spend that length of time there. I think the Mountain is restless.
