At least five people are feared dead after a building under construction collapsed at the EPZ area in Kitengela, Kajiado County on Friday morning.
Reports indicate that a section of the three-storey building caved in as construction was underway, trapping some of the workers who were unable to escape.
Confirming the incident, Isinya Police Commander Ancient Kaloki said rescue and search operations are ongoing.
21-year-old David Chege, who was among the workers who managed to escape, said 10 people were at the building during the 10.00 am incident.
Nation reported that the ill-fated building is owned by a local evangelist who is constructing a school on an eighth of an acre, with locals blaming the contractor for using sub-standard building materials.
“The construction materials used were sub-standard. The house was being built in a hurry. Let the relevant authorities take the responsibility and face the law,” a resident told Nation.

I know there are people who will blame government inspectors for these constant buildings collapses and while there is some truth in that, I think a big portion of the blame goes to us as owners of the projects. The NCA officials visited my residential home construction site a few weeks ago and after inspecting it, they pointed out what needs to be done in order for the project to continue. I complied hata kama niliwapatia very expensive “chai”. An independent engineer looked at the recommendations and agreed with the NCA. Wakenya, tuache hizi shortcuts. Let us do the right thing mafundi wengi wanakufa bure eti ili tu save a few thousands.
