A 53-year-old United Nations (UN) staff who tested positive for coronavirus in Juba, South Sudan has reportedly been evacuated to Nairobi.
Kenya allowed the woman to be flown from Juba to Nairobi for treatment after she was diagnosed with Covid-19 on Monday, April 6th, according to a report by The Standard.
The woman whose identity and nationality have not been revealed traveled to Juba from Nairobi on March 23rd and immediately went into self-quarantine.
While in quarantine, she showed symptoms linked to coronavirus and was confirmed to be infected after she took a test.
“On Monday, we received an alert from UN Level (I) Clinic and our team was immediately mobilized. The Health official said the woman was showing flu-like symptoms on Monday, with a coronavirus test coming back positive this morning,” Dr. Angok Gordon, the coronavirus incident chief at the Ministry of Health in South Sudan said.
Transport Cabinet Secretary James Macharia confirmed a UN staffer who traveled to Juba from Nairobi had requested to be brought back to Kenya but denied claims that South Sudanese nationals had been allowed to seek Covid-19 treatment in Kenya.
“This is a different case. This patient has sought to be brought back and Foreign Affairs has to liaise with the Director-General, Kenya Civil Aviation Authority, for landing rights,” Macharia stated.
“For Sudan nationals, they will have to engage the ministries of Foreign Affairs and Health. They are the ones who can engage and see if there is a possible way,” he added.

We cannot afford to be importing this disease not at this stage.Why did this woman not ask to be repatriated to her home country.She is supposedly showing symptoms that bed she will occupy could have been used by a Kenyan.This is not a time for charity.The south Sudanese need to rebuild their country Kenyan personnel and hospitals must serve Kenyans first we have not forgotten how they killed several Kenyans who had businesses in South Sudan a few years ago.In this era of corona virus it pays to be selfish.Put your own citizens first.
