The body of former Safaricom CEO Bob Collymore has been cremated in Nairobi.
Collymore’s remains were incinerated on Tuesday morning at the Hindu Shamshan Bhumi Cremation Centre in Kariokor after arriving from Lee Funeral Home.
The ceremony was witnessed by family members and a few invited guests including friends and Safaricom staff.
Police officers were stationed at the crematorium’s entrance to ensure no unauthorized persons gained entry.
The cremation happened at a temperature of between 1,000 to 2,000 degrees Celsius, according to The Star.
Collymore, 61, passed away at his Nairobi home on Monday after a long battle with Acute Myeloid Leukemia, a type of cancer that starts in the blood-forming cells of the bone marrow.
On Monday, Safaricom Chairman Nicholas Ng’ang’a said a memorial service will be held later this week in honor of Collymore. Collymore is survived by his wife Wambui Kamiru and four children.
Former Safaricom CEO Michael Joseph has been appointed to replace Collymore in an acting capacity.
