Kenya Government Speaks Out After Hacking of 18 of its Websites by Indonesian Group

The government has confirmed that 18 of its websites were hacked on Monday.

In a statement to newsrooms, government spokesperson Col. Cyrus Oguna assured that the Integrated Financial Management Information System (IFMIS), which was among the websites intruded by hackers, is safe and secure.

Oguna further said there was no cause for alarm as the affected websites are only ‘informational’ platforms, terming the intrusion as defacement.

“The defacing was on websites that are devoted to sharing information with the public. These websites are not connected to any government database or systems,” reads the statement.

Oguna also noted that the government databases and ICT systems are run within a secure private network, which he assured is safe and secure.

Government ICT officials are working to restore normalcy on the affected websites.

Other affected sites include those of the National Youth Service (NYS), Judicial Service Commission (JSC), Immigration Department, Kenya Meat Commission, Petroleum Ministry, and Refugees Affairs among others.

The infiltrators said to be an Indonesian group of hackers named Kurd Electronic Team, placed their logo on the affected websites indicating they had taken control of the platforms.

“Hacked by W4r10k, Kurd electronic team,” read the message on the hacked sites.
