A photo of a dangerously protruding manhole on a busy road in Nairobi has gone viral on social media.
The image, which was first shared on Twitter by @Ma3route, an account that gives regular updates on matters traffic in Nairobi, has left online users asking how a qualified and certified engineer would do such a shoddy job.
The manhole, a potential death trap for car drivers, is found along a busy road in Nairobi’s Pangani area.
Ma3route said drivers who are unfamiliar with the route are forced to swerve sharply to escape the manhole while others find themselves hitting it as evidenced by several pieces of glass scattered around the area.
The Kenya Urban Roads Authority (Kura) shifted the blame to the Nairobi Water and Sewerage Company for setting up the dangerous manhole.
“It has been noted and something will be done about this issue. Kindly bear with us and sorry for the inconvenience and dangers exposed as a result of this manhole,” said Kura spokesperson John Cheboi.
He added: “It is yet not known why the manhole came to be placed at that particular place but we suspect Nairobi Water and Sewerage company people.”
