Ruto's Message to Kalonzo, Mudavadi, Wetang'ula after Raila-Kenyatta Truce

Deputy President William Ruto has asked three National Super Alliance (Nasa) co-principals; Kalonzo Musyoka, Musalia Mudavadi and Moses Wetang’ula to back the unity agreement reached between President Kenyatta and Opposition leader Raila Odinga.

Ruto has called on the three leaders to stop complaining about not being consulted before the meeting between the Head of State and Odinga, and instead, join them in the journey of uniting Kenyans.

“This is not the time to say I was consulted or not consulted, this is the time to unify the country…I heard clearly from the statements of the two leaders (Kenyatta and Odinga) which said divisive ethnicity is going to end and we are the people to bring it to an end, and it starts now,” Ruto said at Tabor Hill Catholic Church in Nyandarua County on Saturday.

The DP said the truce between Kenyatta and Odinga marked the beginning of a healing process following a divisive electioneering period that left the country split into two.

“After the meeting between the two leaders yesterday (Friday), it was clear that the chapter of political competition in the country is over. This is the time to work for the electorates and forget about politics and elections until 2022…This is the moment for our country to stand together and build the bridges of friendship, brotherhood and unity so as to take this country to another level,” said Mr Ruto.

In a joint statement on Friday, Kalonzo, Wetang’ula and Mudavadi complained that Odinga failed to consult them before engaging President Kenyatta. Speaking to the media on Saturday in Mombasa, Mudavadi dismissed the Uhuru-Raila truce as a selfish agreement between two individuals.

“The meeting was between two individuals. It does not bear the imprint of NASA Summit as it ought to be. It was not processed through the NASA structures. Indeed nowhere does the MOU allude to or mention NASA, including the signing off. Instead, the two repeatedly invoke their names and personally commit to each other and not to all Kenyans,”Mudavadi said.

He added: “The MOU is not anchored nor underwritten by any known institutional framework. Neither does it succinctly capture the nagging issues contained in NASA national dialogue agenda for which many have died and others maimed in the recent past.”
