TikTok Deletes 334,000 Kenyan Videos Over Community Standards Breach

TikTok has announced the removal of over 334,000 videos from its platform in Kenya during the third quarter of the previous year.
This action, revealed in the Q3 Community Guidelines Enforcement Report published on February 6, reflects TikTok's ongoing commitment to fostering a safe digital environment in line with its community standards. The report indicates that an impressive 93 percent of the videos removed were acted upon within 24 hours of being flagged. This reflects a proactive strategy to address content that fails to meet the platform's integrity and authenticity criteria or poses potential risks to mental and behavioural health.
Content violations prompting these removals primarily included concerns related to youth safety and the presence of sensitive material depicting mature themes. TikTok's comprehensive approach also incorporates investments in advanced technologies, expansion of trust and safety teams, and local partnerships, all aimed at creating a secure space for users in Kenya to connect and share their creativity.
On a more global scale, TikTok's content moderation practices led to the removal of over 147 million videos across its platform during the same timeframe. Remarkably, 118 million of these videos were automatically detected and removed through the platform's automated systems. This aligns with TikTok's overarching mission to encourage creativity while ensuring user safety and upholding content integrity.
Notably, the figures for the third quarter represent a decrease from the previous quarter, which saw the removal of more than 360,000 videos by Kenyan users. The Q2 report, released in November, indicated that these removals constituted just 0.3 percent of all videos uploaded by users in Kenya. Additionally, the Q3 enforcement report revealed that 60,464 TikTok accounts from Kenya were banned for violating community guidelines, with another 57,262 accounts suspected of belonging to minors being removed from the platform.
