Kenya Issues Security Alert for Citizens in DRC as Violence Escalates

The Kenyan government has issued a security advisory to its citizens residing in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

The government is actively considering evacuation measures, particularly for those in volatile areas near conflict zones. The advisory, dated February 20, 2025, follows escalating violence in the DRC linked to the M23 rebel group, including recent attacks targeting Kenya's embassy and personnel in Kinshasa by riotous mobs.

Prime Cabinet Secretary and Cabinet Secretary for Foreign & Diaspora Affairs Musalia Mudavadi has urged Kenyans in the DRC to exercise heightened vigilance and assess their individual security situations. Citizens requiring assistance are advised to contact the consulate in Goma or Kenya's temporary offices in Congo Brazzaville.

The advisory underscores growing concerns over the deteriorating security situation in the DRC, where conflict between security forces and militant groups led by M23, which initially began in the eastern part of the DRC near the Rwandan border, has rapidly escalated and appears to be spreading to other regions. A previous warning was issued on January 28, 2025, following attacks on Kenyan diplomatic offices and personnel in Kinshasa by protestors angered by the ongoing violence.

Kenya has reiterated its call for an immediate ceasefire and a peaceful resolution to the conflict. Mudavadi emphasizes the government's support for peace efforts led by the East African Community (EAC) and the Southern African Development Community (SADC), as discussed in a recent high-level meeting in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

The Kenyan government continues to urge all parties involved in the conflict to adhere to the ceasefire agreement adopted by regional leaders during the EAC and SADC meeting. The Kenyan government is closely monitoring the situation and is expected to provide further updates on potential evacuation plans for its citizens in the DRC.
