PS Njogu Warns Kenyans Against Southeast Asia Job Scams

During the Nairobi Edition of the Diaspora Job Fair held in Dagoretti South, the Principal Secretary for Diaspora Affairs Roseline K. Njogu urged Kenyans seeking employment opportunities abroad to engage only with licensed and government-approved recruitment agencies.
She emphasized the critical importance of verifying job offers through the National Employment Authority's official website, highlighting the need for vigilance in avoiding potential exploitation. Ms Njogu's address comes amid rising concerns over unscrupulous recruiting practices that often align with international human trafficking networks. She warns job seekers about the inherent dangers of dealing with unregulated agencies, stressing the urgency of ensuring safe employment pathways.
The job fair functioned as a vital platform, uniting various recruitment agencies, job seekers, and government representatives, along with other stakeholders involved in the labour market. The Principal Secretary's warnings are particularly timely, given the increasing reports of Kenyans victimized by rogue recruiting agencies. She points out human trafficking issues prevalent in Southeast Asia—regions including Indonesia, Vietnam, and the Philippines—which have emerged as significant concerns.
This region has been identified for its illicit activities related to labour exploitation, necessitating caution from job seekers receiving offers from that area. Moreover, the grim reality of Kenyan workers experiencing exploitation or even death in Gulf countries has intensified the government's resolve to implement stringent protective measures. In response to these challenges, Kenya has begun signing bilateral job agreements with various countries to facilitate labour mobility, particularly in sectors such as healthcare, engineering, and information technology.
A recent notable agreement with Germany focuses on enhancing vocational training and safe job placements. The Diaspora Placement Agency (DPA), operating under the State Department for Diaspora Affairs, was also highlighted by Ms. Njogu. The DPA plays a crucial role in providing guidance and support for Kenyans aspiring to work abroad, ensuring their employment ventures are both secure and successful.
