The Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) launched a new digital trading platform called DhowCSD in July 2023 in a major move to democratize investing in government debt.
The platform has made it drastically simpler and faster for anyone to open an account and start purchasing Kenyan government bonds and treasury bills. The old Central Securities Depository system required cumbersome manual processes that took up to 14 days just to open an account. With DhowCSD, that process now takes just minutes through a fully electronic and mobile-accessible platform.
The ease of use paid off and in under two months since launch, over 7,000 new investors signed up to trade government securities through the system. A CBK official involved with the project stated in an interview, “When we decided to develop a new CSD, we were determined to make it fully electronic and accessible to as many Kenyans as possible, including our diaspora communities abroad,”
The platform opens up a previously niche market to a wide range of Kenyan individuals both residents and the millions living abroad from East Africa to Europe to North America. Kenyans globally can now easily invest funds into secure government debt instruments and benefit from the returns. To learn more about using DhowCSD to invest, the CBK is hosting a webinar open to Kenyans worldwide concluding on Wednesday, April 17.
The session will cover how to sign up, the different securities available, the purchasing process, and more. Observers see the platform as a major step in broadening participation in Kenya’s capital markets. The webinar will be conducted at the following times to accommodate participants across various regions:
