A United States firm, Alliance Laundry Systems has launched the first-ever laundromats in Kenya.
The commercial laundry company is targeting entrepreneurs from urban centres in Kenya and will give them a full laundromat store. It will also provide operational and technical support to them.
The firm’s Regional Sales Manager, Jean-Paul Mailhac said the demand for laundry services makes Kenya the ideal place to start a laundromat in the Sub-Saharan Africa.
“We have already witnessed that Kenyan entrepreneurs are passionate about a laundromat. Kenya is the country from where we have received the most inquiries by far. It is quickly becoming a need in this society as people spend a lot of time and effort on their looks,” Mr Mailhac said during the launch.
“For the majority of Kenyans living in urban areas, owning a washing machine is a considerable investment. The normal practice is washing by hand, an inefficient and environmentally damaging process. With an emerging market for Laundromats, this task can be easily and efficiently taken over,” Mr Mailhac explained.
Laundromats reduce the cost one would incur in running a washing machine from their homes.
“A Laundromat can professionally clean and dry laundry, making garments look newer, last longer, feel better, eliminating the need to own an expensive machine. One added advantage is having the flexibility to use the laundromat whenever necessary, due to the close proximity of stores. In the right locations, one store can service a 9km2 area – meaning plentiful opportunities in larger cities,” the Alliance Regional Sales Manager Sub-Saharan Africa pointed out.
Alliance Laundry Systems currently operates in 140 countries worldwide.

In my own opinion( again my own opinion for those who like attacking ) if I had my wish I would hand wash my clothes the rest of my life. Kenyans do not be fooled, hand washed clothes are the cleanest clothes- In summer , I strive to hand wash my household clothes and air them in the sunshine, saves energy, and they feel so good too. You have no idea how I enjoy my clothes when I visit +254 ; they are hand washed , rinsed, and aired in the natural sunlight and then pressed. Please do not lose that luxury and please provide employment to all those who need it washing clothes !

You are correct. Apart from jeans and bed-sheets hand wash is the best. The machine does a poor job on the collar and armpit areas of the garments.

@ FG2, as much as I love your views on various platforms I’ll differ on this one.
*We can’t go back to writing letters and using post offices because postal workers need jobs, we’ll use e-mail.
*We can’t go back to riding a horse and buggy because the horse shoe maker stable boys need jobs, we’ll drive cars.
*We can’t go back to using diesel and gasoline powered vehicles because the oil field workers need jobs and they discovered oil in Kenya. They pollute the environment, we’ll go electric.
*We can’t go back to using landlines because people at the exchange need jobs we’ll use cell phones.
There’s constructive technology and destructive technology. This is constructive technology.
Look at it this way;
1* Mama Nguo does not have to use your water or stay in your home to wash your clothes. ( This will help in safety, reduction in water bills as well as morality because we know they don’t wash only clothes.??
2* Mama Nguo can add more customers by picking up more clothes and washing them at the laundromat charging you less due to volume.
3* Mama Nguo can diversify create her own laundry business and clientele including hotels and have a nice solid business vs relying on just one customer.
I can go on and on but it’s definitely a win. Let us embrace constructive technology it may be disruptive briefly but helpful in the end.
